“Confirmed bachelor?” Eyebrows rose, awaiting further illumination that never materialized. “That’s often a euphemism for…” McGonagall faltered, her Scottish upbringing not extending to such indelicacies. “He’s never said so.”

“You’ve never asked before,” said Harry, eyes innocent behind his glasses.

“Professors are not hired at Hogwarts based on anything more than their ability to teach.” She flushed, perhaps remembering spectacular past failures. “But this Ministry paperwork--” She gestured to the single remaining form on her desk. The top line read, “Snape, Severus.”

“I knew you wouldn’t ask, so I did. Over dinner,” Harry said, “And I can definitely confirm it.”
